What Your Avatar Reveals and Conceals at Work
In July 2026, Zoom announced that its Workplace platform now offered realistic, AI-generated avatars for meetings. Created from a photograph, these avatars mirror a user’s facial expressions and head movements in real time. Colleagues see the digital representation of others instead of seeing their live camera feed. Zoom also allows people to create scripted video clips using an AI avatar based on their face and voice. Avatars have therefore moved beyond games and metaverse demonstrations into an everyday workplace platform. But this raises a larger question: what does it mean to be visible at work when colleagues see a representation of you in the form of an avatar as opposed to your true self?
