Caroline Haythornthwaite is Professor Emerita, School of Information Studies, Syracuse University and the School of Information Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), and former Director of the School of Information at The University of British Columbia. Her research examines trends and social network outcomes of work, learning, and social interaction on social media and the Internet. Books include The Internet In Everyday Life (2002); Learning, Culture and Community in Online Education: Research and Practice (2004); E-learning Theory and Practice (2011); The SAGE Handbook of E-learning Research (2007; 2016). Her most recent book, Social Media as Fragile State: Vulnerabilities, Pressures, and Human Rights (2026), presents a framework for assessing the controversies affecting social media platforms.
